Draft List of Deaths Related to the Conflict in 2006
The following page has been compiled by Martin Melaugh to complement the Index of Deaths (1969-2001) by Malcolm Sutton. The information below is in draft form and should be treated with some caution. Some of the deaths listed below may be shown later to be unrelated to the conflict.

Tommy Hollran (49) Protestant
Status: Civilian (Civ), Killed by: Unknown (loyalist)
Beaten and mortally wounded while visiting friends in Carrickfergus, County Antrim. Attacked on Saturday 18 February 2006 and died in hospital from his injuries on Sunday 19 February 2006. [Stories in the media alleged that he had been ordered to leave Carrickfergus in 2005 following a dispute with loyalist paramilitaries. His family blamed the Ulster Defence Association (UDA) for the fatal attack.]
|
4 April 2006
|
Denis Donaldson (56) Catholic
Status: Civilian (Civ), Killed by: Unknown (republican)
Found shot dead at a family holiday home near Glenties, County Donegal, Republic of Ireland. [On 16 December 2005 Donaldson had admitted to being a paid agent for British intelligence and the RUC/PSNI Special Branch since the 1980s. There was speculation in the media that 'dissident' Republicans were responsible for the killing.]

Status: Civilian (Civ), Killed by: Unknown (loyalist)
Beaten and mortally wounded while walking through the centre of Ballymena, County Antrim. Attacked on Sunday 7 May 2006 and died in hospital from his injuries on Monday 8 May 2006. [His family and the police stated that the motive for the attack was sectarian.]

22 August 2006
|
Mark Christie (36) Protestant
Status: Civilian (Civ), Killed by: Unknown (loyalist)
Attacked and then beaten and hacked to death on Owen Roe Drive in the Kilcooley Estate, Bangor, County Down. [A machete, screwdrivers and a hatchet were believed to have been used in the attack. At the time police said they were keeping an open mind on whether or not loyalist paramilitaries were involved in the killing.] |
Uncertain if conflict-related |
29 July 2006
|
Ronald Mackie (36) nfNI
Status: Civilian (Civ), Killed by: Unknown (loyalist)
From Scotland; travelled to Northern Ireland to attend an Orange Order parade. Involved in a dispute at a disco at Tobermore United Football Club, Tobermore, near Magherafelt, County Derry. Badly assaulted by a gang of men and left on a road where he was hit by a passing car. [There was media speculation that the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) was responsible for the killing.] |
